Blood Clots During Periods: When Are They Normal and When Are They a Concern?

Passing blood clots during your period can be normal, but large clots may signal an issue. Learn the difference and what to look out for.

Author: Dr. Nithanth Balshyam

Seeing blood clots in your menstrual blood can be alarming, but it is often a normal part of the body's defense mechanism. Clots help prevent too much blood from escaping.

However, the size and frequency of the clots, along with the overall heaviness of your flow, determine whether they are normal or a sign of an underlying medical condition.

What Constitutes a Normal Blood Clot?

Normal menstrual clots are usually small—no larger than a quarter (or a 1-rupee coin). They typically appear during the heaviest days of your period (usually the first two days).

These clots are jelly-like in consistency and are a mix of blood, tissue lining the uterus, and proteins that help the blood coagulate.

When Should You Be Concerned?

You should consult a doctor if you are passing clots larger than a quarter, or if you pass clots frequently throughout your period.

Large clots accompanied by excessively heavy bleeding (needing to change pads every hour) or severe pain could indicate conditions such as uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, or hormonal imbalances.
