Iron Deficiency and Heavy Periods: Understanding the Vicious Cycle

Heavy periods cause iron deficiency, but did you know iron deficiency can also cause heavy periods? Understand this vicious cycle and how to break it.

Author: Dr. Nithanth Balshyam

It is well known that heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is a leading cause of iron deficiency anemia in women. The monthly loss of blood depletes the body's iron stores faster than they can be replenished through diet.

However, less known is the fact that iron deficiency itself can actually cause periods to become even heavier, creating a frustrating vicious cycle.

How Low Iron Causes Heavier Bleeding

Iron is essential for the proper functioning of the muscles in the uterine wall. When iron levels are critically low, the uterus may not contract as efficiently during menstruation to shut off the bleeding blood vessels.

As a result, the bleeding becomes heavier and lasts longer, which in turn leads to even more iron loss in the following month.

Breaking the Cycle

Breaking this cycle requires a two-pronged approach: replenishing iron stores and treating the root cause of the heavy bleeding.

A blood test can confirm ferritin (stored iron) levels. Alongside iron supplementation, homeopathic constitutional treatment can help regulate the menstrual flow naturally, stopping the excessive loss of blood.
