Periods During Teenage Years: What Is Normal and What Needs Medical Attention?

Navigating teenage periods can be confusing. Find out what is considered normal for adolescent menstruation and when to seek help.

Author: Dr. Nithanth Balshyam

The onset of menstruation (menarche) is a major milestone in a teenager's life. However, the first few years of periods can be highly unpredictable.

It is important for teens and parents to understand what constitutes a normal adjustment period and what might indicate a hormonal or health issue.

What Is Normal for Teenage Periods?

It is completely normal for a teenager's menstrual cycle to be irregular for the first 1 to 3 years after their first period. This happens because the hormonal axis connecting the brain and the ovaries is still maturing.

Cycles may range anywhere from 21 to 45 days, and it is common for a teen to skip a month or two occasionally during these early years.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Medical evaluation is recommended if a girl has not started her period by age 15, or within three years of breast development.

If a teenager has been having regular periods and they suddenly stop, or if her periods are excessively heavy (lasting more than 7 days or soaking through a pad an hour), she should see a doctor.

Severe pain that causes her to miss school or activities is not something she should just 'put up with' and warrants investigation for conditions like endometriosis.
