Periods Twice a Month: Is It Normal? Causes and When to Get Checked

Getting your period twice in one month can be alarming. Learn about the causes of frequent periods and when to consult a doctor.

The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, but a cycle length of 21 to 35 days is considered normal. If your cycle falls on the shorter end, you might occasionally experience two periods in a single calendar month.

However, if you consistently have periods less than 21 days apart, or if you experience unusual bleeding twice a month, it is important to investigate the underlying causes.

Common Reasons for Frequent Bleeding

Sometimes, a naturally short menstrual cycle (e.g., 21 days) can result in two periods falling within the same 30- or 31-day month. This is mathematically normal if it matches your regular pattern.

Hormonal imbalances, perimenopause, and thyroid dysfunction can also cause cycles to shorten, leading to more frequent periods.

In some cases, what appears to be a second period might actually be intermenstrual bleeding (spotting) caused by polyps, fibroids, or infections.

When Should You Be Concerned?

You should seek medical attention if having two periods a month is a new and persistent change for you, especially if the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by severe pain.

Frequent bleeding can lead to anemia due to iron loss, so it's crucial to get checked if you feel constantly fatigued, dizzy, or short of breath.
