Severe Period Pain: Is It Normal or a Sign of a Health Problem?

Discover the difference between normal menstrual cramps and severe period pain (dysmenorrhea) that requires medical attention.

Author: Dr. Nithanth Balshyam

Mild to moderate cramps during your period are common and usually not a cause for concern. However, severe period pain that interferes with your daily activities is not normal.

Dysmenorrhea, the medical term for painful periods, can be classified into primary (normal cramping) and secondary (caused by a reproductive health issue).

Primary vs. Secondary Dysmenorrhea

Primary dysmenorrhea refers to common menstrual cramps that occur due to the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that cause the uterus to contract. This pain usually begins a day or two before the period and lasts for a few days.

Secondary dysmenorrhea is pain caused by a disorder in the reproductive organs, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or uterine fibroids. This pain often worsens over time and may last longer than normal cramps.

When to Seek Medical Help

If your period pain disrupts your life every month, if over-the-counter pain relievers do not help, or if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms like heavy bleeding, fever, or pain during intercourse, you should see a doctor.

Conditions like endometriosis require proper diagnosis and management to prevent long-term complications, including infertility.
